Artist's Comments

Well guys, I can only say that it helps much to learn more than one painting style even if this require copying from time to time. This nice "paint like" (Vermeer) workshop for The Official Painter Magazine is such example.
However, this workshop should help people to learn from the old masters, their history and their working methods to improve their own future paintings!
Therefore the attached disk includes a high res charcoal sketch (lines only) which was directly nailed on top of the painting sothat you will only have to worry about your painting studies!
I really hope that you guys can learn something from this workshop and it would be cool if you show me your results after you have purchased the current issue and grabbed the sketch for practice. This issue #14 is available at your local magazine store or online at [link]

Oh man. I tried my hand at this one not too long ago, actually. It was for a dear friend of mine that wanted something classical to hang on his wall.

I went with Pearl Earring because people tend to liken my lighting schemes to his quite a bit. I wanted it to be like his, but not and... Meh.. the whole story of it is under the painting in my gallery actually. If you want to see it, you can check it out there, Im not going to go on about it lest it sound like ';plugging'

SUFFICE to say that you did a damned sight better at staying true to the original than *I* did. All that yellow -really- threw me for a loop and I had the HARDEST time getting my skin tones and translucency right because of it. I went back and forth on my pallet choices until I about drove myself nuts. The painting itself took me almost a year to finish (for many reasons) yet looking at this one now, it makes me wish I had crept a little closer to his style than I did in the end.

Perhaps I'll have a go at his Kitchen painting next, just to see how close I can get! :D

Thanks for the share!

Just because perfection is impossible, doesn’t mean I've given up attempting to achieve it. :aww:
